OUR STORY: COVINGTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WA

In 1992 the City of Covington was not yet established as an official municipality.  A group of local business owners had a passion to create “Covington” as a clearly definted separate City from those neighboring us.  Working with the local post office they were able to move their mission into reality by forming the Covington Chamber of Commerce.  With business and community support this group of leaders worked diligently to develop an initial identy for Covington.  In 1997 the City of Covington was born and had a strong leadership of local business representatives and community individuals supporting and partnering together to make Covington the best place to live, work, shop and play!

1992

  • July 2, 1992 The Secretary of State of Washington and custodian of its seal, Ralph Munro, issued a certificate of incorporation to the Covington Chamber of Commerce, Washington non-profit corporation. View the Articles of Incorporation 7.2.92 HERE

1996

  • 1996 We started the Covington Chamber of Commerce Scholarship for a local Student to offer a business related scholarship through Kent Community Foundation.

2002

  • July 29, 2002 under the The City of Covington and The Covington Chamber of Commerce created a partnership committee known as “The Covington Economic Development Council”.  This agreement was signed 7.29.2002 by The Covington Chamber of Commerce “President”, Dean Saggau, The Covington City Manager, Andrew D Dempsey and attested to by Jackie Cronk, Covington City Clerk and approved by Covington City Attorney Duncan C. Wilson.  The City of Covington Economic Development Council (CEDC) consists of 5 city appointed and 5 chamber appointed individuals that work collaboratively to improve the City’s economy.  For more detailed information visit the City’s website: http://www.covingtonwa.gov/city_government/cedc.php

2006

  • June/July 2006 The South Sound Chambers of Commerce Legislative Coalition (SSCCLC) was born under the leadership of 4 individuals, Sam Pace, Shaunta Hyde, Gary Nomensen, Tom Pierson.  7 Chambers were involved including: Auburn, Covington, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Fife, Kent, Puyallup/Sumner.  SSCCLC advocates for business and business-related policies impacting the South Sound Region.  Primary goals of the SSCCLC include increasing jobs, competitiveness & regional productivity with a focus on Housing, Education and Transportation.  The South king, North and East Pierce County region is an economic powerhouse for the state with significant manufacturing, retail, service and warehousing industries.    For more information visit the Chamber’s Government Affairs website: http://www.covingtonwa.gov/city_government/cedc.php

2008

  • 2008 The Covington Chamber of Commerce joined the Washington Chamber of Commerce Executives WCCE.

2010

  • August 31, 2010 The Covington Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page was established!  @CovingtonWAChamber

2012

  • December 14, 2012 Racing legend Mario Andretti helped a local Covington, WA business open their doors and accidentally broke the ceremonial scissors!  News Story HERE. (Covington, Maple Valley, Black Diamond Reporter).

2015

  • August 2015 Our App was born – Covington Community App – a free download in the App store Click Here!

2017

  • January 2017 The Covington Chamber of Commerce official became a Virtual Chamber!

2018

  • June 28, 2018 The Covington Chamber of Commerce joined the Association of Washington Business AWB as a member.
  • July 21, 2018 The Covington Chamber of Commerce won the “Spirit of Covington” Award in the City of Covington’s Annual Covington Days Parade!
  • October 21, 2018 The Covington Chamber of Commerce joined the Association of Washington Business Grassroots Alliance as a member.

2019

  • February 2019 Covington Chamber of Commerce 2018 Awards and Finalists are:
  • Spirit of Covington 2019, Winner: Chick-fil-A! Finalists: Laura Roth, RE/MAX Choice Executives and Covington-Maple Valley Reporter!  This award recognizes outstanding effort and commitment to the Covington community by a Covington Chamber of Commerce business during the 2018 calendar year.
  • Business of the Year 2019, Winner: Red Canoe Credit Union!  Finalists: Chick-fil-A and Joanna Mondt of Fairway Independent Mortgage!  This award recognizes the superior performance of a Covington Chamber of Commerce business during the 2018 calendar year.
  • April 26, 2019 The Covington Chamber of Commerce was a Finalist for the 2019 “Best of…” Awards in the category of “Community Leadership Business Award”.  This award is presented by the Covington-Maple Valley-Black Diamond Reporter. To view the full program of finalists and winners click HERE.
